ala—the feather covered wing membrane under a Glynhir’s arm which extends from armpit to elbow and is attached to both the ribcage and the upper arm.
ametite—a dark purple glossy gemstone, a cross between hemitite and amethyst.
amrith—an amber colored alcoholic drink made from honey.
Aniphen—a northern Glyne.
araspice—an incense used in religious ceremonies.
arling—a fruit bush, the leaves of which turn bright red in fall when the globose yellow fruit ripens.
Averlour—a western Glyne where Jalendryel (as Rydree) met Valseth.
birthbrand—a coded mark tattooed on the underside of the left arm of every L’diran and Sildoran infant which designates their birth date and birth Glyne.
birthmier—female parent.
bite-ash—a caustic mineral found on the tops of the Naypass Mountains.
Bitilisar—a northern Glyne.
bluedrop—a small flower with a fresh, clean scent.
bock—a dark beer.
brielhawk—a homing hawk, used for carrying letters. Each drop point is assigned a scent. Before a hawk is dispatched, its beak is rubbed with the scent of the point it is to fly to.
brillie cake—a large flat cookie with holes through it.
Broken Isles—the floating islands in the Terlyning Sea.
buds—a Glynhir’s breasts, small and hard, with barely discernable nipples and entirely covered by feathers.
bull sausage—a thick, dark sausage made of ground meat.
charspice—a drug which produces a state of intense drunkenness, loss of coordination, mental incapacity, and weakness. As it wears off, however, its victims sometimes become violent.
Cianti—A shortened form of the word scientist, used by the realtimers to describe themselves. As their technology was so far above the seeded Dar’Eshi, the Dar’Eshi understood the word to mean a combination of miracle worker and witch.
clish—a group of Kurries.
Creil—a southern Glyne.
dandifluff—the seed pod lining of the giant dandi bush, used as nesting material by many kinds of birds on Taygate including neverns.
Deepings—lands to the east of the Naypass Mountains.
Deeprites—a group of males who wish the Deepings to remain open and be developed.
Deklan—a northern Glyne.
denzille—a line dance where participants pass down and weave through two facing lines, designed so that everyone eventually touches everone else.
dimix crystal—a precious gemstone with a rainbow interior, usually cut and faceted.
Dipplespear—parhouse at a parturition crossroads on the northern side of the Hathan Pass in Dorato Domain.
doctrix—one who acts as a doctor using herbs, poltices and natural healing remedies. Usually practiced by the more sensitive L’diran males.
donn—a fancymale’s customer.
Doran—title used to address a Sildoran.
Dorato—a western Glyne.
dragonling—a small snake-like creature that sprouts legs and wings when threatened. Found only in the Deepings.
draquil—a sweet cream with a mellowing effect on the emotions.
Dumerien—a Dar’Eshi servant/companion caste, extinct on Taygate.
eclite—Dar’Eshi word for electricity
eldstress—an older Glynhir, one who is past her rylling years and able to mindspeak without physical contact.
Ersatzhir—the Glynhir who substitutes for the one in ryll in a trothal ceremony.
fancymale—a male prostitute, a well-repected and often profitable occupation.
fholding stone—a metal transport disk.
Fholdir—a Sildoran who fholds.
fhold—to transport oneself through space with the use of fholding stones.
fiddleleaf—a fern.
Fisere—an eastern Glyne.
fopadandy—one who is overly or outlandishly dressed.
Forfeit Death—the mass suicide of Glynhirs for use only when a Glyne is captured by males.
freshling—a teenage Glynhir who has taken Glynhir lovers but not yet seared.
frip—slang for sexual activity between males.
Frostedmoss—a parhouse one day’s journey outside of Glyne Roche.
Gechinan—a Dar’Eshi warrior caste, extinct on Taygate.
Giflets—a small mountain range that separates the domains of Roche and Lorling.
Gleving—a northern Glyne where Frelshay met Jalendryel.
Glyne—an walled group of buildings in the main city of a domain, home to Glynhirs.
Glynhir—the females of the Dar’Eshi. Glynhirs are universally red haired with blue or green eyes. Feathers cover the sides of their bodies from neck to waist (except the arm). Beneath each arm is a wing membrane called an ala which is feather covered on the back side. Long feathers, called crests, grow behind each ear. A week after mating, Glynhirs lay, or yield, about 70 eggs. Glynhirs live about 200 years.
grandmier—grandmother.
grayjay—a large crested bird with a raucous cry.
Hakian—a Dar’Eshi warrior caste, extinct on Taygate.
Haline—a northern Glyne. Also the domain where Valseth discovers two other tunnels.
hallhouse—an inn, restaurant and often bordello.
Havinsday—a day of worship and rest at the week’s end.
infinity clock—a digital clock with no visible means of power that keeps perfect time. There are only several dozen of them scattered through the Glynes.
itod—ITD or Interplanetary Transport Device.
J’thaning Sea—the ocean west of the Naypass Mountains and south of the Deepings. Named for J’tha.
jabstabber mint—a kind of licorice mint, good for settling the stomach.
jagfruit—a sweet fruit, oblong in shape, with a spiny red skin.
Jesem—a southern Glyne. Also the Domain in which the tunnel to the Deepings is located.
jetstone—a black marble.
joyouser—a merrymaker.
Joypromise Hallhouse—a well-appointed hallhouse in Roche City run by K’risatah.
kah—a Kurry family/social/work group.
Kurry—the infertile male Dar’Eshi. Kurries are short, only reaching about four feet in height, muscular and covered with brown fur. Childlike, the Kurries never reach a mental or emotional maturity. They live about 20 years.
L’diran—a fertile male Dar’Eshi. A Glynhir mating with a L’diran produces Kurry offspring. L’dirans are universally dark eyed and brown skinned with brown or black hair. L’dirans live about 80 years.
L’dir—title used to address a L’diran.
Ladylyn—the title used to address a Glynhir.
larrow root—a long, attenuated white root vegetable with a crunchy texture.
laver—a bathroom.
Leitfire—a southern Glyne.
littlehopper—a sparrow-like bird.
littles—Kurry children. Kurries reach their maturity at age four.
lordin—father. The Sildorans and L’dirans who adopt infant males from the Glynes use this designation to indicate their position in a family hierarchy.
Lorling—a central Glyne to which Shilyli and Daryenn go on parturition and where Daryenn meets Jalendryel.
lovies—the smallest islands of the Broken Isles which cleave to anything larger than themselves, including anchored ships.
Loxler—a western Glyne.
lura—a gold coin. A lura is made up of 1000 penties.
Micathe—a northern Glyne.
mier—mother. A Glynhir who had been through ryll and yielded. The Mier of a Glyne is its matriarchal head.
mindspeech—speaking telepathically.
mindtouch—the presence of mindspeech.
Nandernis—a western Glyne. L’don claims it as his crèche Glyne.
Naypass Mountains—the mountain range which cuts the Dar’Eshi off from the rest of Taygate because of the acid snows on its peaks.
Nearsprings Hallhouse—a hallhouse in Lorling City where M’tir works.
Nerland—a town near the Dipplespear parhouse.
nest—Glynhir’s term for sex or to have sex.
nestlyn—Glynhir lovers.
nevern—a huge flightless bird with a long neck and strong legs ridden by the Dar’Eshi.
omie—the self of a Kurry.
Otoly—a northern Glyne.
oudh—a plant extraction used in perfumes and dyes.
parhouse—a specialized hallhouse located along a parturition route which caters to parturitions.
parlorie—a Glynhir gathering for talk, socializing, gaming, light music and refreshments.
parturition—literally, the bringing forth of young. On Taygate it is the cavalcade of wagons and Dar’Eshi carrying Sildoran and L’diran infants from one Glyne crèche to another.
penty—a small silver coin in several denominations. 1000 penties make up a lura.
perverre—a Dar’Eshi who prefers the sexual favors of the opposite sex, i.e., male/female. This sometimes affects Sildorans and L’dirans employed by the Glynes who sear regularly with Glynhirs. Also used to describe males who sexually molest Kurries.
petans—the female organ of ingress. The petans are tightly closed except during ryll.
phalin—the male organ. The Sildoran phalin is slender and long, (9”-12”) The L’diran is thick and short, (6”-7”). The Kurry is small (1”-2”) and sheathed.
pleasing—the blessing of a Glynhir upon a male consisting of a kiss to the forehead on infants, to the forehead and cheeks of an adult.
Plerinor—a southern Glyne.
Polbete quarries—a large open quarry in Roche Domain.
popnut—a hard round nutmeat, deep fried and served with salt.
poultie—a plump, chicken-like bird raised for meat and eggs.
Prylinhir—a Glynhir priestess.
Raneray—a western Glyne.
Rash—a card game.
realtime—the flow of time in an infinity universe.
richelips—a golden flower with a husky scent.
riffe—a preparation of herbs and minerals the ingestion of which controls the ryll cycles of Glynhirs.
Roche—a southern Glyne, Daryenn’s and Shilyli’s home.
roelles—infant Dar’Eshi in their aquatic, gill phase.
Rooster—a seedy hallhouse near the market plaza in Roche City where Daryenn talks with L’don and meets Kythrie for the first time.
ryll fever—the period when a Glynhir’s petans open and she is ready for searing.
ryllian—the powerful pheromone exuded by a Glynhir in ryll that causes fevered arousal in both Sildorans and L’dirans. Ryllian is so potent, it can cause other Glynhirs to come into ryll.
ryll—the estrus period of a Glynhir when she prepares for mating, or searing with a male.
Scattered Years—Dar’Eshi pre-history before written records were kept.
Scine’s Hill—a small village on the Giflets Plateau just outside of Roche Domain. The village raises sheples for its income.
searslaying—the accidental killing of a sire during searing.
sear—the sex act between female and fertile male for the single purpose of procreation.
sheppe—wool bearing animal. The wool can be nearly any color.
Sildoran—a fertile male Dar’Eshi. Mating with a Sildoran produces Sildoran, L’diran and the occasional Glynhir offspring. Sildorans are universally blue eyed and light skinned with blond hair, ranging in shade from white to dark, golden blond. Sildorans live about 40 years.
silvercresent—a puffy headed white flower on a long stalk.
snowberry—a ground hugging plant that blooms in the fall and ripens its fruit slowly under winter snows. The delicately sweet pale pink berries appear in the spring after the ground has thawed.
snowhawk—a white hawk that lives in the mountains.
spermate—fertile male sperm.
spirtain—a drug that causes sleep, suggestability and paralysis in that order.
starmoth—a very large moth which uses bioluminescence during courtship.
starstairs—a lavender flower, smelling of pastel candy.

A week after mating, Glynhirs lay, or yield, about 70 eggs. Glynhirs live about 200 years.
